Well Grounded support

Well Grounded helps you and your child agree, on a calm day, what happens after a hard moment and what good choices earn. You sit down together, and your child signs the cards they think are fair. When something goes wrong, the app draws one card, only from the ones your child signed, and your child chooses how it’s revealed: Spin the wheel, Scratch it, Open a door and more. Good choices earn crystals for their jar and stickers for their sticker book. There are no accounts, no ads and no tracking, and everything stays on your iPhone or iPad unless you choose to share it.

It helps if you tell us:

• your iPhone or iPad model (in Settings, then General, then About)
• your iOS version (on the same About screen)
• the app version (in Settings, then General, then iPhone Storage or iPad Storage, then Well Grounded)
• what happened, and what you expected to happen.

Please don’t put your children’s names or photos in emails. If you send a screenshot, crop out or cover any names and faces first.

We can’t see your family’s information. There are no accounts, and nothing in the app is sent to us. So we can’t look anything up, bring back lost cards or reset a PIN for you, but we’re glad to help you find your way.

Setting up

Open Well Grounded and read the welcome pages, or tap Skip. On Let’s set you up, add what your child calls you, your child’s first name and the year they were born. Age sets the longest any card can last. Leave the Parent lock switch on (see The parent lock), then tap Start. If your phone has no passcode, the switch stays off; set a passcode and you can turn the lock on later in Settings.

Your first sit-down

Choose a calm moment and give it about ten minutes. On the “You’re ready” screen, tap Sit down with [name] now. Later, tap [name]’s cards on your child’s page, then Sit down with [name].

1. Pick ready-made ideas for your child’s age, or write your own: something you’d like to catch them doing, or something that keeps happening.
2. For each card, your child can say Yes, fair or Too much, or you can change it together.
3. Your child signs the cards they agree to with a finger, and you agree too. If you’ve switched on Agree by saying “Agreed” in Settings › More, your child can say “Agreed” instead of signing.

Nothing is added to your child’s cards unless you both say yes, and only signed cards can ever be drawn. Next time something happens, tap Good or Not so good on your child’s page.

Adding another child

Open Settings (the gear at the top right of Home) and, under Children, tap Add a child. Your first child is free. A second child is part of Well Grounded Plus, unless they were already in the app when you first opened version 3.1 (see Families who used Well Grounded before 3.1).

If you used the first Well Grounded

When you update, your children and their photos come across, with your past history. The old cards come across as ideas: sit down together and sign the ones you still want, because nothing unsigned is ever drawn. The app also asks how old everyone is, since age sets the longest a card can last.

What it does

The parent lock keeps grown-up actions with a grown-up. It uses Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode, or a parent PIN if you set one. When you first set up Well Grounded on an iPhone or iPad that has a passcode, it starts switched on.

It asks before:

• starting a draw, and everything it earns
• ending a card
• spending crystals
• rewards and agreements
• Settings, backups and sharing
• adding, removing or sharing action packs.

The jar, the sticker book, history and tips are always open to look at. During a draw it asks once, not at every tap. The same list is in the app, in Settings › More › Parent lock › What the lock protects.

Setting a parent PIN

If your child knows your phone’s passcode, set a parent PIN. In Settings › More › Parent lock, set Ask for to Parent PIN, choose 4 to 8 digits, type it again and tap Save. From then on the lock asks for the PIN instead of Face ID or the passcode, and saving a PIN also turns the lock on. The PIN is stored on this device only, in a form nobody can read back, us included. Five wrong tries pause it for five minutes.

If you forget your parent PIN

When Well Grounded asks for the PIN, tap Forgot the PIN? It is also on the Have a rest message after too many wrong tries. After Face ID or Touch ID, choose a new PIN of 4 to 8 digits. It replaces the one you forgot. The device passcode never works for this, because a child may know it.

If your iPhone or iPad can’t use Face ID or Touch ID, the PIN can’t be reset, and the only way on is to start again:

1. If you have an encrypted backup file, find it and its passphrase first. Making a new backup needs the PIN.
2. Delete Well Grounded from your device, then install it again from the App Store. This removes your family’s cards, crystals and history from the device.
3. On Let’s set you up, switch Parent lock off. If you have a backup, tap Moving from another device? Restore a backup. Then tap Start.
4. Open Settings › More, tap Change parent PIN and choose a new one. This turns the lock back on.

Keep a note of your PIN somewhere safe that your children can’t reach.

Turning the lock off

In Settings › More, switch off Parent lock. It asks for Face ID, the passcode or your PIN first. With the lock off, anyone holding the phone can start a draw or hand out crystals, and the Plus screen asks a grown-up to answer a short sum first.

Well Grounded has no accounts, so your family’s things move with a backup file that you make and keep.

On your old phone

1. Open Settings in Well Grounded, then More. The parent lock asks first.
2. Under Moving to another device, tap Make a backup.
3. Choose a passphrase of at least 8 characters. Tap the eye to check it, write it down somewhere safe, and switch on I’ve kept this passphrase somewhere safe.
4. Tap Make backup, then choose where to save the file, called “Well Grounded backup”. Somewhere the new phone can reach, like iCloud Drive, works well.

On your new phone

1. Install Well Grounded and open it.
2. Go through the welcome pages. On Let’s set you up, tap Moving from another device? Restore a backup.
3. Choose the backup file, type the passphrase and tap Restore. Then tap Start.
4. If you use a parent PIN, set it again in Settings › More › Parent lock. It isn’t part of the backup.

Already set up on the new phone? In Settings › More, under Moving to another device, tap Restore from a backup… Restoring replaces everything on that phone with the backup. If Plus doesn’t show afterwards, see Restore purchases.

What a backup holds

What your child calls you, your children (first names, birth years and picture), their cards and signatures, history, rewards and crystals, sticker books, groups, installed action packs, and links to other grown-ups with what they sent. It also carries your thank-you months of Plus, if you have them.

It leaves out voice recordings, side notes and photos of what happened, and your parent PIN. Settings such as sounds and jar size stay on the old phone, so check them on the new one.

If you lose the passphrase

We can’t recover it. The passphrase never leaves your device and we never see it, so without it nobody can open the backup, us included. If you still have the old phone, make a new backup with a new passphrase.

iCloud and iPhone backups

Well Grounded doesn’t sync with iCloud. Your device’s own backup (iCloud Backup or a computer) includes Well Grounded like your other apps, with some things left out by design: side notes (the voice or typed notes for a sit-down) and photos of what happened are never backed up. Your parent PIN and links to other grown-ups stay with the old device, so after moving that way, set a new PIN and make new codes. To bring everything, use Well Grounded’s own encrypted backup.

Plus is an optional subscription. Everything that keeps your family safe and fair is free for ever. The Plus screen sits behind the parent lock (or a short sum for grown-ups if the lock is off), so it’s always a grown-up’s choice.

What’s free, and what Plus adds

Prices and the free week

There are two plans: Plus for a month and Plus for a year. The yearly plan starts with 7 free days for new subscribers. Prices are shown in the app in your local currency, and your Apple Account is charged when you confirm. Apple takes the payment, and we never see your card.

Both plans renew automatically until you cancel. If you don’t cancel during the free days, the yearly plan is charged when they end. To avoid being charged, cancel at least 24 hours before the free week or the current period ends.

Plus follows your Apple Account, so it works on any iPhone or iPad signed in with it. With Family Sharing, the other members of your family group can use it too. Your family’s cards stay on each device and don’t sync from one to another.

Plus is covered by Apple’s standard Terms of use and our Privacy policy. Both are linked on the Plus screen too.

How to cancel

On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings › , then your name › , then Subscriptions, choose Well Grounded and cancel. You can also go to apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions, or tap Manage or cancel on the Plus screen in the app.

When Plus ends, nothing is deleted and nothing your child has earned is taken away. Every child’s page, jar, stickers and history stay. New draws for a second child, and the other extras, ask for Plus again.

Restore purchases

If Plus doesn’t show after moving to a new phone or reinstalling, open Settings in Well Grounded, then More, and tap Well Grounded Plus. Below the plans, tap Restore purchases, next to Privacy policy and Terms of use. Make sure you’re signed in with the Apple Account you used to subscribe.

Refunds

Apple handles every payment, so refunds go through Apple. You can ask at reportaproblem.apple.com.

Families who used Well Grounded before 3.1

You keep everything. Every child who was in the app when you first opened 3.1 stays free for ever, with their draws and rewards, whether or not you choose Plus. As a thank-you, you also get three months of Plus free. A note for grown-ups on Home reminds you a week before they end, and nothing is deleted when they do.

If you paid once to unlock the first Well Grounded, Plus is yours for ever. If it doesn’t show, tap Restore purchases.

Let a teacher or co-parent send you moments

A teacher, co-parent or guardian who also uses Well Grounded can send you what they noticed about your child. To let them:

1. On your child’s page, scroll down and tap For grown-ups, then Grown-ups who can send. You’ll also find it in Settings › More › Send with a code, as [name]: who can send.
2. Tap New link, add their name and role, and tap Save.
3. Read the code out to them, or tap Copy code or Share…. The code isn’t kept on your phone, so give it only to them.

They can send only about that child, and only to your phone. You can remove a link at any time, and its code stops working at once.

Send moments to a parent

If a parent gave you a code, open the child’s page in your own Well Grounded, tap For grown-ups, then Send to a parent and Link to a parent. Tap Type in their code, type it once and tap Save. After that, Send to a parent lets you choose what to send, shows exactly how it will read, and sends it as a link, a code or a file. Other children’s names are swapped out where the app can tell.

Open what someone sent you

Tap the link or open the file they sent, and Well Grounded opens it. If they sent a code, copy it, then in Settings › More › Send with a code, tap Import a code or file and then Paste a code. You’ll see what they sent before anything is added, then tap Add to [name]’s page to keep it. Nothing changes crystals or stickers unless you choose.

Action packs

An action pack is a .wgpack file of ideas that another family, club or community has shared: actions with fair cards. To add one, open the file from Messages, Mail, AirDrop or Files, or in Settings › More tap Action packs and then Import a pack file… The parent lock asks, the pack is checked, and you see what’s inside before you tap Add to our library.

A pack only adds ideas to your library. Nothing changes for any child: every action still needs a sit-down and a signature. You can remove a pack at any time in Settings › More › Action packs, and anything you’ve already agreed stays. Five packs come with the app, and Share our actions as a pack makes one from your own.

Pack files aren’t private: anyone who gets one can read it. They hold only words, never names, signatures, photos or history.

Sharing the sticker book

Sharing the sticker book is off until a grown-up turns on Share the sticker book in Settings › More (the parent lock asks first). Then a Share button appears in the sticker book. After the parent lock, choose the whole book as a PDF or one page as a picture. It shows your child’s first name and their stickers. What each sticker was for is added only if you switch on Show what each sticker was for. You choose where it goes from the share sheet, such as Messages, Mail, AirDrop or Files; Well Grounded doesn’t ask for your photo library.

Encryption

Backups and anything sent with a code are encrypted on your device, with Apple’s built-in encryption, before they leave it. A backup opens only with your passphrase, and moments open only on the phone that made the code. We can’t open either.

The Crystals widget

Touch and hold an empty part of your Home Screen, add a widget and search for Well Grounded. The Crystals widget shows the family’s crystals together, or one child’s jar, and when a running card ends. To choose a child, touch and hold the widget and tap Edit Widget. Names and card words appear only if you switch on Show the card on the Lock Screen in Settings › More › Widgets, Siri and the Action Button; otherwise a child’s widget shows a coloured initial. If a widget looks out of date, open Well Grounded once.

A running card on the Lock Screen

While a card is running, it shows on the Lock Screen, and in the Dynamic Island on iPhones that have one, with the time it ends. Your child’s name and the card’s words appear only if you switch on Show the card on the Lock Screen in Settings › More › Widgets, Siri and the Action Button. It’s off to begin with.

Control Centre, the Action Button and Siri

On iOS 18 or later you can add a Not so good control to Control Centre, the Lock Screen or, on iPhones that have one, the Action Button. You can also say “Good in Well Grounded” or “Not so good in Well Grounded” to Siri. The parent lock still asks before anything is drawn.

Deleting everything

In Settings › More, under Your data, tap Delete everything and confirm. The parent lock checks it’s you. This removes every child, card, signature, recording, note, photo and history entry from the device, along with your parent PIN, links to other grown-ups, the action packs you added and card reminders. It can’t be undone.

If you’re removing Well Grounded for good, use Delete everything first: iOS can keep the parent PIN and the keys for links to other grown-ups even after an app is deleted. Deleting everything doesn’t cancel Plus, which Apple manages (see How to cancel). A backup file you saved somewhere else stays there, so delete it there if you want it gone.

How long history is kept

In Settings › More, under Your data, set Keep history to 3 months, 1 year or For ever. Older history is deleted automatically.
